NTEP Legal for Trade Scales
In the United States, if you are conducting business by weight, the scales that you use need to be approved under the NTEP system (National Type Evaluation Program). This means that the scale has to have a C.O.C. (Certificate of Conformance) number. This number proves that the scale type has been tested and the National Conference on Weights and Measures affirms that the scale is capable of giving an accurate weight over time and in varying temperatures.
Conducting business (trading) over a scale means �Devices that are used for selling, purchasing, exchanging, custody transfer or establishing the cost of services or hire on the basis of measurement�. Anywhere that you define the cost of the service or goods by weight needs an NTEP scale. If you are using your scale in a retail setting, farmers market, laundromat, pharmacy or jewelry store you probably need an NTEP scale. NTEP Scales are usually approved to a certain degree of accuracy and accuracy class. It is important to contact your state or local weights and measures department to learn what degree and class of accuracy you are required to have for your purpose/industry.
